Flag: the history of an Italian success in the world
Flag S.p.A. has been founded 50 years ago with the name Flexon Italiana.
In collaboration with the group Montecatini Edison it starts manufacturing synthetic materials for the agricultural sector, specifically waterproofing membranes for polyethylene tunnels for protected cultures and kit for quick waterproofing of water containing areas.
In 1970 the company changes its name into Flag S.p.A. and increases its business areas. Thanks to Flag S.p.A. synthetic PVC membranes are introduced in Italy for industrial roofing and the first examples of underground waterproofing start to be conveived.
The success is immediate and allows the company becoming a undebated market leader. Since then Flag S.p.A. has continued developing and proposing innovative waterproofing solutions that respond to the most demanding technical requests worldwide.
FLAG was also forerunner in the use of TPO waterproof membranes. In the 90ies it introduces polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene) in its production range of waterproofing synthetic membranes. The first applications were realised in the hydraulic sector where, since then, thousands of square meters have been successfully set.
Thanks to these first successful experiences and to research and development, resulting from the collaboration with several manufacturers of raw materials, the company sets up the membrane which will soon become the outmost waterproofing membrane FLAGON TPO.
It’s no more an Italian success only, but it assumes a global dimension that leads Flag S.p.A. to open 5 branches in Europe and be the supplier of waterproofing systems in the most important worldwide works.
At the end of 2007, FLAG Spa enters the French group Soprema leader in the production of roofing and waterproofing materials, thanks to the collaboration of 4.496 people all over the world and a turnover by 1.497 million Euros in 2012.
Production facilities for waterproofing synthetic membranes
Flag SpA manufacturing is featured by 4 different production lines.
Thanks to these facilities FLAG can manufacture PCV and TPOI waterproofing membranes applicable in any waterproofing sector. Roofing, underground works, hydraulic works and swimming pools.
In the head office at Chignolo d’Isola (BG) apart from the offices, the training center and the laboratory, 3 co-extrusion lines are working for polyvinyl chloride membranes, FLAGON PVC, and modified polyolefine membranes FLAGON TPO.
The facility at Villa S. Stefano (FR) produces spread polyvinyl chloride membranes, FLAGON PVC; swimming pools membranes, FLAGPOOL, and the innovative systems for architectural covering, COPPER ART and SILVER ART.
In order to guarantee the fit performances required by different application fields, FLAG’s membranes are different by composition, by the availability of the inner reinforcement, and by the availability of geotextile layer coupled on the surface during the production phase.
Research and development of ecological waterproofing solutions
All PVC and TPO waterproofing synthetic membranes are designed, developed, and implemented in Flag S.p.A. Research and development laboratories. These membranes are included in the production cycle of the company and pay particular attention to the improvement of innovative solutions and guaranteeing the overcoming of the quality requirements prescribed by the market. Every aspect is carefully examined to minimize the environmental impact of the products and to guarantee their use in compliance with the operative safety conditions both in the production and in the application phase.
The commitment of Flag’s R&D laboratories starts before the realisation phase, with the implementation of the compounds of half-finished products and of raw materials.
This pre- and post-production continuous monitoring, perfectly combines with the mission of Group Soprema: Offering long-lastingness, functionality, reliability, aesthetic and high technology for the whole product range.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
FLAG quality management system has been conceived to comply with the requirements prescribed by standard UNI EN ISO 9001.
The tests and proofs necessary to verify the compliance of chemical-physical characteristics, featuring the various waterproofing membranes manufactured, are performed in Flag’s Quality control laboratories at Chignolo d’Isola and Villa Santo Stefano, according to the directives issued by UNI (National UNIfication Body) and by the corresponding foreign regulation bodies.
This ensures a high quality standard in all phases of the production process: Starting from the production of a new material up to the technical support during the setting of finished products.
ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION
Since more than 20 years SOPREMA GROUP has been starting an approach to assess and minimize the environmental impact of its synthetic waterproofing products and of its activities in the life-time of a building (including products manufacturing, building, management and demolition).
Environmental sensitivity in Flag SpA production facilities and in the other facilities of Group Soprema is realised by the commitment to use low environmental impact substances, always trying to improve manufacturing methods, complying with the latest scientific assessments, sometimes anticipating the process indicated by European environmental policies.
Flag’s commitment for environmental sustainability is confirmed by the environmental quality certification UNI EN ISO 14001 obtained.
