CPI win® FSE: how to define fire scenarios according to the FSE

CPI win® FSE (with FDS 5)
CPI win® FSE (with FDS 5) offers the possibility of conduction special studies for singular buildings. By using our advanced fire simulation software, the user can models and analyzes virtual fire scenarios. Through these models our customers can control fire growth, soot emission and transport or sprinkler activation times. CPI win® FSE (with FDS 5) is a powerful analysis tool for studying the “phenomenon of fire”, anticipating its development, propagation and effects on people, structures and objects. Therefore it allows an optimization and verification of the fire extinction and control systems.

FSE: when do you apply it?
When compliance cannot be achieved with the required fire safety standard, CPI win® FSE principles allow to obtain fire protection exemptions, especially if planning, architectural, structural or production constraints exist. The program is very useful also in the event that only general prevention and protection principles can be applied, in these cases safety compensatory measures are necessary. Through CPI win® FSE you can simulate incidental events using mathematical models, so you will be able to study the phenomenon of fire using strategies and technics whose validaty can be demostrated and accepted. FSE methods are particularly useful when fire prevention exemptions are needed, especially if prescriptive rules are not applicable, in case of major accident risk or fire expert report (e.g. determine if the fire was arson or not).   

CPI win® FSE, which fully applies the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) calculation methods, version 5, of the American NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology – www.nist.gov), allows you to:

  • quickly and accurately draw the structures of a building in dxg/dxf format, creating rooms layout (walls, doors, windows, furniture, etc…); complete 3D rendering provides easy control on input data; accurate prints allow to define scale prints and paper formats supported by the plotter. It is also possible to print only plan portions;
  • create your own block library and relative properties;
  • create solid boundary surfaces library, they can be modeled with multiple layers of materials (walls and heterogeneous solid surfaces);
  • make use of user-friendly wizards that will guide you step-by-step through the input of FDS required parameters (e.g. devices) and the input of parameters needed to identify combustible material type (materials library);
  • measure parameters trends through proper probes: temperature and oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide percentage, etc.;
  • Hypothesize sparking points, doors opening, detectors activation, sprinkler activation;
  • Simulate in addition to fire development and spread, also combustion products generation. The software generate a short film in AVI format that last as much as the verification does;
  • Obtain fundamental values needed to correctly render what has been assumed and simulated, such as temperature changes, visibility levels and oxygen percentages;
  • Find the time-temperature curve (real fire curve) to apply to the structure in order to calculate its R and perform fire resistance test to predict fire resistance of the structure; fire resistance tests on reinforced and pre-stressed structure can be performed using our software called CPI win® REI; fire resistance tests on steel structural elements can be done using CPI win® ACCIAIO;

CPI win® FSE with FDS 5 features:

Combustion at various levels. The reaction patterns with multiple levels can describe local extinction, the production of CO2 and various other phenomena.

COMBUSTION: The combustion model in FDS has been improved so that it can now model extinction and the user now has the option to model rather than specify CO production.

Material Layers. The solid contour surfaces can be modeles with multiple layers of materials.

PYROLYSIS: the FDS solid phase algorithms have been overhauled to provide a better description of heat transfer and pyrolysis. First, there is an increased functionality that allows multiple layers of materials. Next, the pyrolysis algorithm has been generalized to allow for multiple materials undergoing multiple reactions.The intent here is to describe how real materials burn.

Database. All parameters have to be specified in the input data file.

MATERIAL PROPERTY INPUT: As a result, starting with FDS version 5, the database has gone away. It is hoped that this will spur a renewed effort by the fire research community to develop new, or re-interpret existing, robust, practical methods of obtaining material properties, with an emphasis on fire-specific phenomena like pyrolysis and char formation.

CPI win® FSE (with FDS 5) is the first software in Europe that let you fully apply the Fire Safety Engineering principles. It allows the user a performance-based approach to designing structures for fire resistance or to preventing and protecting structures, people and objects from fire.

CPI win® FSE (with FDS 5) is particularly useful when traditional prescriptive requirements are not applicable and exemptions for fire prevention need to be obtained. Fire Safety Engineering methods needs to be apply if there are urban, architectural and structural constraints that make completion of prescribed standards impossible. Using factors such as fuel load and ventilation, the maximum credible fire in different locations in the building is calculated, and the structural response to these fire is calculated.
In the future performance-based fire codes and associated analysis will eventually replace the traditional methods. The basic concept underlying performance-based fire analysis is that a building should be designed for the fire safety severity that might actually occur in the building rather than for a code specified “one size fits all” fire.
